AKC Marketplace is a classifieds page for registered litters — no commission, but no infrastructure either. What $119 a year buys you there, what it doesn't, and how the two actually fit together.
If you breed AKC-registered litters, the AKC Marketplace is probably already on your radar — it's the official classifieds attached to the registry itself, and the AKC name carries weight with first-time buyers. It's also one of the few places online where being listed requires a registered litter and good standing with the registry.
So how does it compare to running your own platform? Short answer: it doesn't, really — they do different jobs — and that's exactly what's worth understanding before you spend on either.
What AKC Marketplace is
A listing service. You buy visibility for a registered litter in the AKC's directory, buyers browse and message you through the platform, and everything after that — applications, deposits, contracts, payments — happens off-platform, however you normally do it.
The current pricing (per the AKC's own store, as of this writing):
- $45 for a single litter listing (90 days)
- $12/month plus a $25 sign-up fee, unlimited litters
- $119/year, unlimited litters
- Plus the prerequisite: each litter must already be AKC-registered ($49.99 per litter, which most AKC breeders pay anyway)
Two genuinely good things about that model: there's no commission — the AKC never touches your sales — and the eligibility bar (registered litter, good standing) filters out some of the noise that plagues open classifieds.
What it doesn't do
Everything else. The Marketplace gives you a profile page on akc.org and a messaging inbox. It does not give you:
- A website of your own — your "presence" is a listing on their domain, under their brand
- Application or waitlist management (beyond basic pre-screening questionnaires on the paid plans)
- Payments, deposits, or invoicing of any kind
- Litter and puppy record-keeping, heat cycle tracking, or pedigrees for your own use
- Customer emails or updates to your buyer list
- Reviews that build your kennel's name
That's not a criticism — it's just not what a classifieds product is for. But it means every family the Marketplace sends you still needs somewhere to land: a site that makes your program look like what it is, a form that qualifies them, a deposit flow that closes them.

How they actually fit together
Here's the honest read: for an AKC breeder, the Marketplace is a cheap, commission-free lead source with a trusted name on it — $119 a year for extra eyeballs is easy math if even one buyer a year finds you there. There's no percentage-fee trap to warn you about, unlike marketplaces that require on-platform payments.
What the Marketplace can't be is your infrastructure. The families it sends you deserve better than a listing page and an email thread — and your program deserves records, payments, and a waitlist that don't live in a spreadsheet.
